If you are looking for science fair project ideas, you can create an interesting science fair project from the Insect Attractions investigation in which students try to determine what attracts insects. See the bottom of this article for links to the related articles.
Research
You will need to do some additional research to provide background material for your science fair project. Some books like these might help:
- Big Book of Bugs
- Everything Bug: What Kids Really Want to Know about Bugs (Kids’ FAQs)
- Simon & Schuster Children’s Guide to Insects and Spiders
Problem and Hypothesis
For your problem, try something like:
Are insects attracted more by color or smell?
or
Which colors are most attractive to insects?
Remember to write it in your own words. Your hypothesis is simply what you think the answer to the question will be. Remember, your hypothesis is an educated guess, based on your research.
Procedure and Data
The procedure was outlined in the previous articles. See below. You might need to make it more specific. Remember to run through it to find any problems. Another person should be able to copy what you did just by following your procedure.
The data will be the charts you made with your tally marks.
Results
For your results, organize your data into a bar graph. Show how many insects landed on each color. If you did the second part of the investigation with the honey, add a second bar for each color with that data.
Conclusion
The conclusion is up to you. Did the data support your hypothesis? Remember, it is not a failure if you determined that your hypothesis was incorrect. You learned new information as a result of running your study, and that is what matters.
